Students in anatomy classroomHoused in the STEM Education Center, the Teaching Major in Science, with concentrations in Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Life Science, Physics, and Middle School Science, helps students to develop into teaching professionals with the agility to navigate content and novel classroom situations. Students in this degree program receive a strong foundation in science content knowledge and science education pedagogy as well as general education courses (e.g., educational foundations, educational psychology, multicultural education, adolescence development). Importantly, this program includes significant practical experience in the classroom and satisfies state licensure requirements to teach in the respective secondary science area (grades 5-12) or in middle school science (grades 5-9).

Our Collaboration with Teachers College

As a student in our secondary education program, you will take courses in both the College of Sciences and Humanities and Teachers College. In the College of Sciences and Humanities, you will take science content courses and courses designed specifically for teaching science. Through our unique collaboration with Teachers College, you will take general education courses, explore other important aspects of teaching, and interact with teaching majors in other disciplines.
